There are a wide variety of commercial garage door types, including sliding, folding, one-piece (up-and-over) and roll-up. In the U.S., however, the most common by far is the sectional garage door. Three, four or five horizontal panels are hinged together and fitted with rollers. The entire assembly rides in two parallel tracks.

A heavy-duty torsion spring, wrapped around a torsion bar, serves to counterbalance the weight of the door, enabling homeowners to lift the door either manually or with an assist from a ½- to 1-hp electric motor. Without the spring, the door would be very heavy for either a person or motor to lift.
